Capacity - Thousands Of Items
Duration - Less Than 2 Seconds
SENSORY INPUT from our five senses to the brain, first enter an Immediate Memory Zone. This type of memory lasts less than two seconds, and enables us to perform continuous activities, ie. allowing us to notice the thousands of leaves on a tree and also that one of them is beginning to fall, or walking across the room, or reading a sentence. Instincts play a big role in immediate memory (also called the sensory memory).
Single comparisons are made between sensory images. Are they any different from a second ago? Immediate memory affords us the opportunity to notice a potential change and puts Short-Term Memory on standby.
A major share of our sensory experience is converted into its neurological language equivalent before actually being stored in the various memory zones of the brain, and before being processed for other intellectual purposes.
For example, when we read a book, we do not store the visual images of the printed words but, instead, store the words themselves in language form. Also, the information conveyed by the words is usually converted to language form before its meaning is discerned. This process of Audiographic Memory is well established by Puberty ! This is one reason why the acquisition of foreign language skills is best accomplished before Puberty.
