WE HUMANS NOT ONLY THINK AND ACT,
but we also think about our thoughts and actions and we know that we are doing so. We consciously experience things and are also conscious of the fact that we are consciously experiencing. We are constantly inwardly watching, monitoring, constantly reflecting on our own ongoing experiences and evaluating them, critically interpreting their significance and planning ahead.
This superordinate awareness of self as self and this executive monitoring of self are such constant and pervasive features of our normal alert everyday lives that it is often taken as the point of reference for alerted consciousness; when to some notable degree they are not so actively aware - as for example, in states of drowsiness and sleep, strong emotions, etc..
While in a state of Trance, the ongoing conscious experiences are
«Dissociated»
from the usual interpretative framework of cognitive understandings of everyday life. The individual is not consciously aware of the distinction between imagination and reality. The subject ceases to be consciously aware of time, self, or his surroundings.
As the state of Trance deepens, there is (temporarily) a progressive loss of one's Self-Reflective Executive Monitoring. That is not to say that the individual's Self-Reflective Executive Monitoring is deminished, only the critical interpreting of our experiences is compromised.
A Hypnotized person is not a will-less automaton! Every person has a will of their own, but some people choose not to exercise their capacity to make choices, giving the responsibility for themselves to others to manage. By recognizing control as an issue for all persons, one can better respect the individual's choices. Strength of will can be used by anyone to any degree to either work with or against the hypnotist. Motivated behaviors are carried out by the subject only because at some level he himself is motivated to carry them out.
