«We all face problems in our lives.
Sometimes those critical situations just cannot be avoided. It is what we do with them that makes or breaks us! Calisthenics, sports, and various forms of entertainment are all useful in distracting you and wearing you out. Still they do nothing to refresh you! »
«Even if you manage to forget those troubles while you are listening to music, or watching that movie, or jogging around the sidewalks of Rochester Minnesota;
Still they manage to return as soon as you stop! »
«By using this Self-Hypnotic method of Hypnosis, you can relax, roll with the punches, while maintaining a steady state of Inner Strength & Well Being.»
Gymnastics Of Concentration
Concentration :
The ability to maintain a concerted sequence of thoughts or mental functions; is a discipline of the Mïnd that falls clearly within the purview of the Frontal lobe. By concentrating, you are training your Mïnd and enhancing your ability to learn and remember.
In many cases of learning, often two ideas are given. In order to understand the given material, we must think them into unity. For example: Mathematicians say that the three angles of a triangle equal two right angles. Having this idea clearly in mind, we then think of two right angles side by side.
Thinking is the combination of two or more ideas to embody yet another idea; one which is no more contained in the originals than salt is contained in sodium or chloride. Thinking is an extension of the practice of concentration, and depends upon it.
Concentration is necessary for correct thinking. The stronger the grip and fuller the grasp of the concentrated Mïnd, the more direct and less wandering the thinking will be. A person thinking from idea A to idea B may wander about before reaching his goal, as seen in the following diagram:
A==============>|
|<=========
===========> B
While a more trained Mïnd will reach its conclusion almost in a straight line.
An individual who carries out a definite system of physical exercise for a short period every day soon becomes stronger than the individual who wields the hammer all day long. This same principle holds true for the Mïnd. It too requires regular and well proportioned exercise, nourishment and rest.
Exercises found on the Personal Training CDs are only Mental Gymnastics, though they may be interesting and even entertaining if taken in the right spirit. The Mïnd is exercised in this manner as a step ultimately towards Meditation (Dhyãna in Sanskrit) and Contemplation (Samãdhi in Sanskrit); where our higher states of consciousness may be experienced while the Mïnd itself is transcended. Meditation comes from the concentration of thought. It is the continuation of focused attention, taken beyond the plane of sensuous perception. Contemplation, on the other hand, is the final fulfillment of concentration, where consciousness is taken to a state of ecstasy.
Concentrate On The External Object
Concentration (Dhãranã in Sanskrit)
is the state of devoting exclusive attention to one subject, and can be focused in one of three different areas:
1) on an External Object, 2) on an Internal Object, or 3) on an Idea.
A GOOD WAY TO RELAX and develop your power of concentration is to select an external object for your attention. No matter where you are or what you are doing, just take a few minutes out of the day to concentrate on some one thing.
Attention of the Mïnd seems to be directed to only one portion of the brain at a time. It is this reality which can be taken advantage of and provide you with a state of relaxation over your entire body.
(See ATTENTION )
Exclude all other thoughts from your Mïnd and concentrate solely on that one object. As you do this, begin to regulate your breathing. As your know, relaxation is a physical function. The muscles of your body use oxygen absorbed from the bloodstream. Your bloodstream, in turn, extracts that oxygen osmotically from the air you breathe. By regulating your breath, you regulate the oxygen available in your blood; your muscles extract the optimum amount and consequently are much more prone to relax for you than they might otherwise.
If you have been exposed to yoga, you probably know that there are sorts of complex breath-regulation techniques. The one that I recommend, called the 10/5 rhythm, is quite simple.
It essentially proceeds as follows :
- Breathe IN to the mental count of ten ...
- Hold your breath IN to the mental count of five ...
- Breathe OUT to the mental count of ten ...
- Hold your breath OUT to the mental count of five.
The rate at which you should count varies from individual to individual.  Start by synchronizing it with your heartbeat. If this does not seem to work, or is uncomfortable, vary the number, until you reach the rhythm that is most comfortable for you.
Once you have established a comfortable rhythm of 10/5 breathing, let this continue for about two or three minutes; then begin the following concentration exercise.
It helps if, while doing this, you take IN your breath deeply from your diaphram through your nose. Try to hold your breath for the count five, but don't force yourself. Then exhale OUT through your mouth. When you exhale, let your chest muscles relax completely. As you continue this exercise, you will notice your level of mental awareness begins to rise to a heightened sensitivity that you had not experienced before !
The object of your concentration should take on
«Special Significance.»
Try to see all of that one object! If, for example, you are concentrating on a tree, become aware of its height, shape, color, thickness, and posture. Consider its own particular relationship with its immediate environment. How close is it to other trees? Does grass come close to the trunk, or does that tree command a certain respectable distance?
Does this tree seem to be pushing itself out from the ground, or is it deeply rooted and reaching for the sky? Does it capture the wind with its leaves and branches, or does it stand defiantly against it? Does it appear to be in a dance frozen in time? Does it seem to dance with the other trees and rooted life all around it? Or, does it not dance at all? What of the other forms of life; such as the birds and squirls? Do they seem to find solice in it with perches and nests, or do they apear to favor other trees around it?
Your goal here is to reach the deepest level of absorption in thought and relaxation that you possibly can. Your ultimate goal is to reach Level 22 in Hypnosis.
Sometimes you must dealing with those
«
Intruding Thoughts.»
Occasionally while we are engaged in concentrating, intruding thoughts may surface. These thoughts are mostly concerned with the considerations of oneself, and are linked to some emotion and memory in the Mïnd. There is always a tendency for us to regard those things and people that we encounter in our daily lives in the light of how they affect our own lives.
As long as we do this, feelings about them will constantly invade our Mïnds when we least expect or desire it, and these feelings will in turn awaken their corresponding trains of thought. As long as you choose to regard other people and the events of life solely as they concern your own daily life and feelings, your Mïnd will be perpetually swept here and there by the winds that blow from everywhere. The Mïnd will be full of memories and anticipations which habitually suggest emotions of anxiety, regret or resentment.
It is therefore desirable that you weaken and destroy these associations, which are so full of mental and emotional agitation, by constantly regarding other people and things not as appendages to your own personal life, and providing you with occasions for resentment or self-gratification; but rather as working out a destiny of their own, one in which you can help or hinder them. In practice, this means that you should form the habit of considering another man's actions, motives, words or conduct, not as they affect your own life and whatever you may be interested in, but as they affect his own life and interests.
This unselfish mode of thinking prevents the accumulation of personal thoughts, and certainly concentration can not be fully accomplished unless it is seriously undertaken. The states of Mïnd during concentration and during the rest of the day react upon each other, and if you can, to a large extent, eliminate anxiety, greed, envy, jealousy, anger, fear, pride and irritability from your daily thoughts, it will be so much easier for your concentration.
